Dubai World Hospitality Championships
Wales: The name evokes passion and pride, a dragon-fired sense of national identity and, above all, the legendary warmth of Welsh hospitality. Nowhere are these qualities more visible than in the Welsh National Culinary Team.
The globetrotting Welsh National Culinary Team is the pride of Wales as, arguably, the small nation’s most decorated team. Since its formation in 1993, the team has assembled the country's finest exponents of the culinary arts to promote and compete for Wales at the world's premier gastronomic contests.
The team is proud to have HRH the Prince of Wales as its very supportive and enthusiastic patron and the talented Welsh chefs regularly cook for members of the Royal family, heads of state and senior politicians at state occasions within Wales and private functions across the UK.
In the last year alone, the team has been invited by the Welsh Government to cook at major overseas VIP receptions in Barcelona and Russia.
The team selected to compete in Dubai shows a nice blend of experience and youth. Welsh team manager Graham Tinsley has always been keen to develop young chefs who are capable of stepping up from the junior to senior team when the time is right.
For most team members, this will be their first visit to Dubai as competitors and they are really honoured that Wales has been invited to participate and looking forward to the challenge of matching their skills against the best chefs in the world.
The talented chefs, who make up the team, work in some of the top restaurants and hotels in the UK and overseas. Apart from displaying their culinary skills, they play a key ambassadorial role in promoting Wales and its high quality and versatile Welsh food and drink industry around the world.
Wales is probably best known worldwide as the most recent home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and birthplace of superstars Tom Jones, Catherine Zeta Jones, Sir Anthony Hopkins and the late Richard Burton.
The nation is also now firmly established on the world map for its culinary skills, enhanced by the country's wonderful natural ingredients. It's no coincidence that the rising stature of the Welsh National Culinary Team has been matched by Wales' growing international reputation for the quality of its food and drink products.
The country is blessed with a fantastic array of fish from its fabulous coastline, rivers and lakes, Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef rank alongside the world's finest meat, Welsh dairy produce, especially speciality cheeses, is in great demand and a wonderful range of produce grows naturally in the spectacular hills and lush, green valleys.
